The University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy has launched a public policy lecture series that aims to bring the Chicago Harris experience to alumni and friends across the country and around the world.

The Chicago Harris Public Policy Lecture Series features members of the distinguished Chicago Harris faculty offering evidence-based insights on an array of public policy issues. The lectures are followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience.

The inaugural lecture took place on September 12 at the University Club in Chicago, Ill.  Jens Ludwig, McCormick Foundation Professor of Social Service Administration, Law, and Public Policy in the School of Social Service Administration and Chicago Harris, discussed gun violence in Chicago in the context of national trends. He also highlighted promising approaches to combating gun violence, sharing examples of the leading-edge research and policy initiatives spearheaded by the Crime Laband the Urban Education Labat the University of Chicago.

On September 25, Jeffrey Grogger, the Irving Harris Professor in Urban Policy, addressed Chicago Harris alumni and friends in Mexico City about his research on Seguro Popular, Mexico's federal health insurance program that serves more than 50 million Mexican citizens. Professor Grogger's research examines the program's impact on healthcare spending, utilization, and outcomes since its introduction in 2003.

“The Chicago Harris Public Policy Lecture series significantly advances our effort to foster public discourse and engage the larger world on an array of salient public policy issues,” said Chicago Harris Dean Colm O'Muircheartaigh.  “We believe the lectures will offer audiences deeper insights into the pressing public policy issues of the day and spur exciting, vibrant discussions. Moreover, these events are an opportunity for the Chicago Harris community to connect with faculty, alumni, and friends.”

Future lectures will occur through next spring. Admission is free*, but an advance RSVP is strongly encouraged.  For additional information on the lecture series, visit the Chicago Harris website.
