Dr. Ben Lahey presents Understanding Dysfunctional Maternal Parenting: Genes to Neurons to Populations
Description
Harsh parenting is of immense importance to the health and wellbeing of human beings. It is both inherently abhorrent and a powerful risk factor for the kinds of mental and physical health problems in the offspring that most strongly decrease their longevity.
This presentation will describe a program of research on both the effects of harsh parenting on offspring and on the reasons why women vary so much in their parenting behaviors. The ultimate goal is to trace the environmentally moderated pathways from gene variants through variations in neural functioning to harsh parenting to its effects on children.
Dr. Ben Lahey is the Irving B. Harris Professor of Epidemiology, Psychiatry, and Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Chicago, BSD, Department of Health Studies.
