The Future of Energy

Enhancing dialogue on emerging energy and science policy issues.

 

The 13th Meeting of Dean's International Council focused on enhancing dialogue on emerging energy and science policy issues of international importance, as well as current events in the Middle East, and enriching collaboration among DIC members and U.S. scientific, economic, and political leaders.  

The opening welcome and dinner at Everest featured a speech by John Mearsheimer, Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago, and a breakfast the following morning was hosted by former US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.

The meeting featured six panel discussions:

  • "Sustainability, Technology, and Innovation"
  • "The Future of Nuclear Energy After Fukushima"
  • "Middle East Uprising and the Peace Process"
  • "Rethinking Revolution in the Arab World"
  • "The Societal Impact and Policy Relevance of Advances in Computing"
  • "Financial Meltdowns and Central Banks"

Keynote addresses were delivered by Jose Miguel Gonzalez, Consul General of Chile; David Schenker, Aufzien Fellow and Director of the Program on Arab Politics at The Washington Institute; and Ray LaHood, U.S Secretary of Transportation.  

DIC members also enjoyed a special reception at the Adler Planetarium featuring the lecture "How Many Universes?: From Before the Big Band to the End of Time (and Back)!” by Michael Turner, Bruce & Diana Rauner Distinguished Service Professor in Astronomy & Astrophysics at the University of Chicago.
