Faculty Development Awards

This award supports promising faculty members in the early years of their careers who are engaged in innovative research on achievement, health and well-being across the lifespan. This award provides support for research assistance, data acquisition, travel, or for salary support.

2010-11 Award Recipients

Professor Ioana Marinescu, The Harris School of Public Policy Studies, for her research on the effect of job loss on divorce.

Professor Alicia Menendez, The Harris School of Public Policy Studies, for her research in South Africa on reciprocal relationship between socioeconomic status and health status.

2009-10 Award Recipients

Professor Amy Claessens, The Harris School of Public Policy Studies, for her research on early school achievement and later success.

2008-09 Award Recipients

Professor Ofer Malamud, The Harris School of Public Policy Studies, for his research on the effect of home computer use on child outcomes.

Professor Ioana Marinescu, The Harris School of Public Policy Studies, for her research on the causes and consequences of job mobility.


Research Incubator Award

This award will provide funds to a group of at least two people who are interested in developing a research proposal for funding. The purpose of the award is to help "jump start" a grant proposal. Such an award could allow the team to hire a student to conduct a review of the literature or preliminary data analysis, invite a consultant for a day to brainstorm about ideas, or perhaps hold a one day retreat for the research group.

2007-08 Award Recipients

Professor Judith Levine, School of Social Service Administration, for her book project entitled, Reaching for the Bottom Rung: Low-Income Women's Climb into the Labor Market before and after Welfare Reform.

Professor Tomas Philipson, The Harris School of Public Policy Studies, for his book project with Anupam B. Jena, entitled Health and Economic Inequality in the United States.


Human Potential Conference Award

This award will provide $8,000 to faculty scholars organizing a conference related to one of the Center's program areas.

Post-Doctoral Fellowship "Topping Off" Awards

This award will be offered to faculty to supplement the salary of, or provide benefits for, a current or incoming post-doctoral student whose research supports the Center's mission. Depending on availability, the award will range between $10,000 and $15,000.


Dissertation and Pre-Dissertation Awards

The Center will offer a select number of $5,000 dissertation awards and $2,500 pre-dissertation awards to Harris School doctoral students on an annual basis. View the application instructions (PDF).

2012-13 Dissertation Award Recipients

Pedro Bernal, Doctoral Student, The Harris School of Public Policy, for his research on the effect of health insurance on health care utilization.

Alejandro Ome, Doctoral Student, The Harris School of Public Policy, for his research on the various implications of the Estatuto de Profesionalization Docent (ESP), an education reform in Columbia, including its impact on attracting more qualified teachers, on student outcomes, and on identifying good teachers.

Maria Fernanda Rosales Rueda, Doctoral Student, Harris School of Public Policy, for her research on the economics of the family and child development, including the study of parental investment responses to child health conditions, the effects of negative exogenous shocks in early childhood on later outcomes, and an examination of the impact of the Nurse Family Partnership on child skills and parenting.

2012-2013 Pre-Dissertation Award Recipients

Elise Chor, Doctoral Student, Harris School of Public Policy, for her work on effect of the availability of universal preschool in Australia on families' use of child care and other pathways by which public preschool may affect child and family well-being, including parental employment patters and family time.

Patricia Ritter, Doctoral Student, Harris School of Public Policy, for her work on the effect of internet and cell phone access on sexual behavior, fertility and sexually transmitted diseases, and the effect of a cash-transfer program on domestic violence.

Chloe Hutchinson-Gibbs, Doctoral Student, The Harris School of Public Policy, for her research on the impact of full-day kindergarten on educational outcomes.

Javaeria Qureshi, Doctoral Student, The Harris School of Public Policy, for her research on the spillover effects of oldest sister's education on younger siblings' learning outcomes, and the impact of school quality on student achievement.

2011-2012 Pre-Dissertation Award Recipients

Alejandro Ome,Doctoral Student, The Harris School of Public Policy, for his research on the effect of meritocracy for teachers in Columbia on student outcomes; the effect of parental assessments of children's ability on school choice; and how parental accuracy in assessing children's ability.

Maria Fernanda Rosales Reuda,Doctoral Student, The Harris School of Public Policy, for her research on the mechanisms by which an specific early childhood intervention influences childhood outcomes; and on the impact of disability in early childhood on intra-family investments and on family's future fertility decisions.

Javaeria Qureshi, Doctoral Student, The Harris School of Public Policy, for her research projects on the impact of school quality on student achievement, and intra-household school choice in rural Pakistan.

Jorge Ugaz, Doctoral Student, The Harris School of Public Policy, for his research projects on children’s malnutrition and outcomes during the elementary school years and the impact of exogenous income shocks on children’s health and school outcomes, specifically, the typhoon season of 1984 in the Philippines. Ugaz is also examining working to create a framework that would allow the estimation of the impact of parental time investment on children's cognitive and non-cognitive outcomes.

Graduate Student Travel Awards

Irving B. Harris Prize for Outstanding Honors Paper on Child and Family Policy
